Layer 2 deps would be great.

Layer 2 dependencies built either automagically through cdp, arp, or lldp or a way to build them easily by hand.

RE: Netflow
I've been told by my boss that he wants a network map display like the one in Solarwinds, with links drawn and nodes that bring up the device information when you click on them.

You might say that's already possible with the google maps portlet, but in practice our map is devoid of links and I've haven't been able to put any on it. So that may tie into the layer 2 mappings that other people are asking for.

A standarized portlet for putting graphs on the dashboard would probably also go over well with him. Frankly Zenoss doesn't get as much use around here as it should because my coworkers think it's too complicated to use.

What do you want in King Crab?
Netflow/sflow - please

It would be perfect then !

Not what I want but what I need....
Reporting and Data exporting

I need a way to easily get at the performance and availability data on a daily basis so we can write custom reports in house. Zenoss does not need to have more than a few weeks of data stored if we can get it exported.

"They" use Excel and MS SQL server for capacity planning so the natural fit here is to feed them the raw data from Zenoss.

Thanks the tool..... still in a long term evaluation here.

I'd like to see process monitoring really work. There are numerous posts where folk have processes being monitored where Zenoss insists that the process is down when it is up and vice versa. There is a theory that you need to lock processes or they disappear if they happen to be down on a remodel. There is some suggestion that the PID is checked as well as the process name (so if a process has restarted, it has a different PID and doesn't get detected). I have seen all these but never consistently.

Please overhaul the process monitoring code and update the documentation.

Cheers,
Jane

Yeah something NetFlowish with sleek a map and easy graphed reports would give zenoss a trump card against competitors.
Essential for monitoring and getting a big picture of what is going on in a network.

Evolve the network discovery towards Layer 2 Mapping and cdp discovery functions like in Netdisco to be able to create and have a database inventory relation on each network device,
all devices connected to i.e a switch interface get a higher layer value and so on to make it easy and automagic simple for correlating and dependency options for all kinds of things.

Oh, and secondary performance ping/collectors plugin on a localhostserver with other settings so you could have different cycle times and other settings for cirtain chosen devices with other priorities. the only solution today is to install a second server and is kinda drastic.

Most important of all keep up the good work and hang tough.

Better distributed management:

* Handle network outage for distributed zenhub and monitor:

- whenever the link to the main mysql database is lost, all events are lost and the distributed zenoss processes need to be restarted.

- whenever the link to the main ZEO server is lost, the distributed zenhub stop and need to be restarted.

* Distribute as much databases as posible
- Distribute the mysql database (multiple mysql servers)
- Distribute the ZOPE database (multiple zope servers)

A simple feature that our other monitoring systems have:

Allow entering a message when acknowledging events.

This coupled with easier display of messages related to an event. They're kind of hidden away in the "Log" tab right now. I think they should be shown in an easily visible area of the first part of the message.

I think this is critical for team communication when handling events.

Native support for VMware ESX Host monitoring , CPU, Memory, Disk I/O , Network.
Native support for VMware ESX Guest monitoring, CPU, Memory, Disk I/O , Network.

VMware ESX Host configuration change alerting.

Working performance monitoring for devices, with CPU, Memory, Disk I/O , Network on all servers, unix, windows, as well as Network Devices, ( Cisco as example )

Native support for storage array's like EMC clarrion or NetApp FAS monitoring , CPU, Memory, Disk I/O, Disk latency, FC , CIFS, iSCSI stats, , Network.

Native HP SIM Agent support.

Secure E-mail Appliance monitoring and stat reporting ( example , ironport or zixmail )

Active Directory user authentication for logins.

Unique devices, by IP / MAC Address, to allow devices with the same hostname, ( different networks )

Network Printer support, toner levels, error reporting, alert monitoring, perf monitoring.

The ability to trend the above perfmon, and export to PDF, or send via e-mail in PDF at times / dates.

The ability to create a custom report page from separate hosts into one multiple graph that could be linked into a centranet page. ( example sharepoint ) ( use example, showing ESX host, and Storage array CPU and Memory, Disk and Network, usage on intranet site, on a TV on the wall )

workaround

Additionally,
It would be very valuable here to have an option to sort events in a severity range, (only warnings, or info-error range) as sometimes a massive event storm hits and we want to focus on on specific type of event severity in the mop up phase of fixing the issue. With 1500 events it some times takes longer then the refresh rate to find the event you were just looking at.

I believe that you can effectively get around what you want.
Make a custom event view (Settings > users) that has the severity field. Then you can sort by that field.

Also, you can easily set the refresh of event consoles in the upper right. Set it much higher, stop it, start it, and it wont refresh!

This would work great if I only had a few users or ones that would be willing to set this up, However I have a boatload of users and setting this up for them would cost much more time then I am able to spend on that aspect.

You can create event views for a group instead of just a single user.
