What do you want in King Crab?

Greetings from Zenoss,
Now that the beta for 2.4 (aka "Blue Crab") is ongoing, we're starting to look ahead to the next release of Zenoss, code-named "King Crab". Obviously not everything can be implemented, but we want to hear what you think Zenoss is missing, so we're soliciting your input for features and ideas for the next release. What are your biggest aggravations, what sorts of things would make you like Zenoss that much more? Post your ideas, big and small and we'll integrate them into the planning for King Crab once it gets started.

I would really like to see some wizards, better and easier reporting, and of course better documentation and/or online how to videos.

My biggest issue is still that there's no way to process an event without foreknowledge of the event. In other words, if a new trap comes in that hasn't yet been mapped, there's no way to forward it as email or cause it to get processed in some way. Even mapping it doesn't cause the mapping to process it as an event unless it comes in again.

In other words, I'd like to be able to have a new event come in, someone recognize that it needs to be addressed (not just mapped) and be able to assign it to be worked on (an email could either send it to a ticketing system or a technician).

Fix small problems with display in Chrome.
-Column width not wide enough in dashboard - cuts off right side
-using network view with a non pinned nav pane, the nav pane shows up behind the network view page

Layer 2 dependencies built either automagically through cdp, arp, or lldp or a way to build them easily by hand.

Layer 2 Mapping and dependencies! SFlow and or NetFlow support would
also be nice - do what packettrap.com does with Perspective (Zenoss does
some / much of this already).

Here are a few things that would make zenoss much more useful to me:

- An easy way to do custom reporting from the regular web interface, instead of zope
- A top like graph on the perf tab that lets you see what particular applications are doing
- Make zenoss support HA clustered processes in an easy way
- Checks to see if a process is running on at least one node out of a group
- Checks to see if a filesystem is mounted on at least one node
- And I second netflow support

I think anyone who uses a lot of site to site VPNs like us would like this bug/feature request worked on:

http://dev.zenoss.com/trac/ticket/3276

Its sad that we can't just get these interfaces and routes via SNMP but knowing when a site to site VPN link goes down vs. getting a thousand critical messages would be nice.

2. "Auto" handling of SNMP traps not mapped to events

2a. Alternatively, maybe an interface that shows a list of all possible traps (either within an MIB or a composite list), then a quick way to assign those traps to an event. It should include an easy way to create CLEAR: i.e. rdbmsStateChange trap includes rdbmsRelState - if that value is 5 then it's up and running, etc.

3. Ability to copy Event mappings: for example the rdbmsStateChange trap. I had to retype everything in each of those inputs for each of 5 values so that I could have it respond to the event with the appropriate Severity. If I could copy it then it would be simply changing 1 or 2 fields.

1. Stop cheking a hosts processes when a host is down.

2. An easier way to do dependencies, maybe even a drop down so our less experianced users can properly add in a device.

As stated above.....

Dependencies and parent/child relationships amongst devices and applications/services.

Nagios has had this for quite some time. It's my one big beef with Zenoss compared to Nagios. If I have a point-to-point router puke, I get errors for all of the hosts and services on the other side of that router.

Additionally,
It would be very valuable here to have an option to sort events in a severity range, (only warnings, or info-error range) as sometimes a massive event storm hits and we want to focus on on specific type of event severity in the mop up phase of fixing the issue. With 1500 events it some times takes longer then the refresh rate to find the event you were just looking at.
