Core apache Monitor and "Apache - Slot Usage" graph

We're running Zenoss 3.2.1 on SUSE 11

We're testing the Apache monitoring Zenpack in our test Zenoss enviornment.   I'm seeing something strange on the "Apache - Slot Usage" graph.  When we put a small simulated load (10 to 15 requests per second, CPU load < 10%) on the apache server, I notice that the graph dips down below the total number of slots.  We have the MaxClients and ServerLimit both set to 50 and the MaxSpareServers set to 32.  When the apache service is idle, according to the graph, the "Open" slots = 18, "Waiting" = 31, and "Sending Reply" = 1, for a total of 50.    But when we put a small load on the server the sum/aggregate of all the slot types goes down about 20.   This doesn't make any sense to me.   The number of total slots is always 50.  Shouldn't the graph aggregate always be a flat line?

I attached a screen print of the graph.  You can see the server is now idle and the total aggregate is back up to 50.

Is anyone else running this Zenpack, that can shed any light on this?
