Cisco-Mibs; how do I use it?

I'm sorry if this is sort of a dumb question, but how do I actually use the Cisco-Mibs zenpack?  I follwed the instructions to remove the zenpack itself, leaving the MIBs behind, but I wasn't sure how to actually use them.

The MIBs are used by SNMP trap messages as they come in. The message will be changed from the OID to a readable event message.

Thanks tcount.  I guess my question is though, how do I assign a MIB to a device class, or is that not how it works?

the MIBs are in Zenoss, the OID coming in is read by Zenoss and it interprets what the device is from that info.

If you go to http://tools.cisco.com/Support/SNMP/do/BrowseOID.do?local=en you can see how an OID is understood and read to determine the device and what information is coming in.

What I don't understand though is what can I do with the 1000+ cisco mibs that are part of that zenpack?  In my case I want to monitor a catalyst 4507R.  I'm guessing I'll have to dig through the MIBs to get an idea of what I could and want be using; but how do I actually do anything useful with those MIBs?  If the MIB doesn't apply directly to a device class, what does and how do the MIBs get used?  There is no visible hints on the Cisco-Mibs zenpack page and the admin manual only seems to refer to MIBs, not how to do anything with them.

You don't directly work with the MIBs. SNMP traps need to be directed to the Zenoss server. The server uses the MIBs to understand the OIDs. It then knows what to do with the information. If a device had a bad fan, it would send out the appropriate OID, Zenoss reads that and tells you that this device has a bad fan. The OID is shorthand for the SNMP trap message. You need to have Zenoss set as the snmp-server, with the proper community string.

If an OID comes in from a Nortel router, Zenoss would not know how to interpret the OID unless the proper MIBs are already loaded into Zenoss.

I think I get it now.  Zenoss needs the mibs to take the OIDs, or specifically the data related to the OID sent by a remote, and make sense of that data then?

 

If that's the case, I'm guessing that the way to get more extensive monitoring out of a cisco switch than placing it into /devices/network/switch, would be to create a new sub class in /device/network.  From there, I would add a custom template and start adding data sources based off of the OID referenced by the Cisco MIBs installed by the Cisco-Mibs zenpack?

You could also add the CiscoASA zenpack. Then customize it for your environment.
