Matt Ray Matt Ray  says:

To monitor a Linux EC2 instance via SSH:

  1. Install the Linux Monitor ZenPack.
  2. Save your public key from the AWS site on your monitoring server (ie. zenoss.pem)
  3. Add your EC2 instance under Add Device
    1. Device Name is the instance's Public DNS
    2. Device Class Path is /Server/SSH/Linux
    3. Set the Discovery Protocol to "None"
  4. Go to the new Device.
  5. Under zProperties set the zKeyPath to point to it (ie. ~/zenoss.pem)
  6. Under zProperties set the zCommandUsername (ie. "ubuntu" or "root")
  7. Under zProperties set the zPingMonitorIgnore to "True".
  8. Model the device.

You could use one of the more specific Linux ZenPacks if necessary (or other OS as applicable).
