Installing Zenoss on Debian

Posted by shuckins on Mar 29, 2007 8:55:07 PM

Here's a big shout out to TRS80 a.k.a James who installed Zenoss on Debian recently and then  published  the build instructions to the Zenoss forums. James writes:

"So I saw Zenoss linked from slashdot, and thought I'd give it a shot, having recently tried Zabbix and OpenNMS and finding neither was much good. So I downloaded it and noticed that it came with a whole bunch of third-party packages. Most of them were already available as Debian so I had a shot at installing Zenoss using them instead. I seem to have been successful, so here's how I did it...."

This is a beautiful thing, we supply our source code so you can compile on virtually any platform you choose. However, not everyone has the tech chops that James has, so in the future we hope to provide more binaries supporting Debian, and other Linux distributions in the mean time,  make is our friend...

Heya,

after reading the ./ article I had a fast view on zenoss and decided to scrap the plans to use nagios at work, instead I'll setup zenoss.

I intend to build a Debian package and get it into Debian (I hope that I won't run into licence issues while doing so, but on the first look I think it's all GPLed).

So I wanted to report the usual ITP bug against Debian's wnpp pseudo-package in the bug-tracker, but I had to realize that there's allready one:  #361253. But I think that the original submitter is not going to work on it anymore, at least he didn't react on any mails. So I'll grab the ITP bug and package it. Can't wait to have it running in our department with about 30 switches and several hundred computers, servers and printers.

I guess you'll hear from me on the mailing lists.

Best regards,
